The Pleiku Campaign was the first major operation for the 1st Cavalry Division. It marked many firsts, including the first time American combat troops fought against regular troops of the People's Army of Viet Nam (what we called the NVA), the first time B-52s were used as support for ground troops, and the first time true air assault tactics were employed in combat. The campaign involved most units in the division at one time or another, including the 2nd Battalion 5th Cavalry. The report was written by then Captain J. D. Coleman, who served a second tour with the 1st Cav in 1969. Mr. Coleman went on the write "Pleiku: The Dawn of Helicopter Warfare in Vietnam."
The report is quite large. For that reason, it is broken into segments. This will allow people on slower Internet connections to download the report without tying up the phone line for an hour or so. With regrets, the maps in the original report are not included in their entirety as they were too large for any available scanner. However, the essential information is retained. All pages are in PDF format which requires the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.
