Summary -August 1970

To be written

August 1 - 3

C 2/5 Cav is on FSB Granite.  There also was an awards ceremony on August 3. Most likely, this was the ceremony in which  SSG John Taylor, SP4 David Resendee, and SP4 Larry Speight received their Silver Stars for actions on June 20th. Along with the rest of 2/5 Cav, Charlie Company departed the area around FSB Granite, which was turned over to the ARVN 9th Regiment, and moved to Camp Gorvad at Phuoc Vinh,  the 1st Cav's forward operating base.  (Source:  Unit History, Calendar Year 1970, 2/5 Cav)

August 7 - September 6

2/5 Cav was "Palace Guard" for the division base camp.  C Company saw no action during the period, though other companies had minor fights.  It was a time to live in barracks - and do a lot of Army "details" too.

There was one FUBAR operation on August 28th.  The entire battalion was alerted at 1:30 AM to deploy to Tay Ninh at first light.  Extractions began at 6:30 AM, and the entire battalion landed at Tay Ninh airstrip at 9:15 AM.  There everyone sat until 4:30 PM, when helicopters picked us up, and the troopers flew back into night positions around Phuoc Vinh.

The battalion rear area was at Quan Loi, also known as LZ Andy, until early in the month, when it moved to Phuoc Vinh.  Quan Loi was an area of perpetual red dust, built in the middle of a rubber plantation.

Clockwise, starting upper left:

  • Battalion Headquarters
  • Slick landing at the air strip - note the tall radio tower in the background
  • Quan Loi from the air - note the color of the dirt
  • Eddie Hancock and Tim Edwards.

Robert Lisenby sent home this clipping from an in-country newspaper - probably the division's Cavaliar, or maybe the Stars and Stripes.  But - the article mentions C 2/5 Cav.

Note the comment at the bottom when it was discovered the NVA were carrying C-Rations:  "When they start eating C-rations, you know they're hard up."

Does this give you an idea how big the bombs were that were dropped during a B-52 "Arc-Light" strike?  Members of 1st Platoon enjoy a muddy dip.  (Source:  Jim Holcombe)
