Summary September 1970
This was a month of major transition for the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry. As other American units were pulled out of Viet Nam, the 1st Cavalry Division moved away from the Cambodian border area into an area north and east of Saigon to help protect the big logistics bases and air fields in the Long Binh - Bien Hoa - Saigon area. The Binh Tuy - Long Khanh - Phuoc Tuy area consisted of hills and small mountains, and was very different from the border area we had operated in since November of 1968.
September 7 - 21
Moving by C-130 fixed wing aircraft and C-47 "Hooks", the entire battalion moved from Phuoc Vinh to Binh Tuy Province where it took over operation of FSB Buzzard from the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, which was departing Viet Nam. (Map) The area was very quiet, with only a couple of small contacts - none by Charlie Company. (Source: Unit History, Calendar Year 1970 2/5 Cav, and "Where We Were in Vietnam" by Michael P. Kelly)
September 21 - October 10
C 2/5 Cav moved to another old 199th base - FSB Silver. No significant contact was made, though both Robert Lisenby and the 2/5 Cav history recall a brief firefight when A Company found a supply cache. (Source: Robert Lisenby based on letters home, and Unit History, Calendar Year 1970 2/5 Cav)
