Merry Christmas to all of my C-2/5 Brothers. May of 69 Scott Andresen lost his life in a firefight in the middle of the night I was moved into his foxhole position within minutes to help cover that area I didn't really know him personally because he was kind of new and we were in different platoons but what I do remember was seeing his face, hews lying on the ground face up right behind me and several different moments I turned to see him and I could never get his face out of my mind. Well I got a chance to visit his private memorial in Melrose, Ma this past Nov 27th, it is beautiful the only memorial in the park. and it is right across the street from his mothers house. His mother is still alive in a nursing home somewhere in New Hampshire. If any of you knew Scott personally if you are ever in that part of the country don't pass up seeing Scotts Memorial I was very honored to be there. Take care my Brothers and enjoy the Blessings and freedom that we have because of men like Scott Andresen and all the others. |

Just heard terrible news Dolf Carlson died May 6,in Georgia former Soviet Union of a heartattack. He was my Lt. inCo B before he was your CO. Best officer I ever served under. I was one of hisSquad Leaders.Beautiful obituaries on the internet. |

I served with A/2/5 in 69 and 70. Great website, I found it googling around for info on Lean Apache, which we liked to refer on the horn as "skinny indian". I enjoyed the history and stories and remember some of the actions and our part in them, particularly the Nov. 4 overrunning of LZ Ike. Thanks for the memories. Old men in Washington spend young men in the field, like they spend dollars for their own interpretation of "our national interest". |

I found this update on the internet. Sgt Kumangai was my Platoon Sergeant when I was in Vietnam in 1967 & 1968. (January 2012) The first Palauan national to join the U.S. Armed Forces in 1954, retired Army SFC Francisco Masato Kumangai, passed away in Koror, Palau in December 2011. During his career in the U.S. Army, he served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. Of Mr. Kumangai's seven children, five followed his example and joined the U.S. Armed Forces: one graduated from West Point, two graduated from the Naval Academy, one from Citadel, one served in the Air Force and one is still in active duty in the Army Reserve. Approximately 500 Palauans currently serve in the U.S. Armed Forces five have been killed while on active duty since 9/11. The funeral was held on Peleliu on December 11, 2011 and was attended by numerous Palauan government officials, including Palau President Johnson Toribiong as well as the U.S. Ambassador to Palau Helen Reed-Rowe. U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, visiting Palau at the time, attended and delivered a condolence letter from Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. Major General Benny Paulino, Adjutant General of the Guam National Guard, led an Honor Guard from Guam to honor the deceased. (Source: U.S. Embassy Palau) |

I am a high school teacher in Melrose, MA. We are researching 11 Melrose casualties in Vietnam. I was able to find some information about Cpl. Scott Andresen here. I wondered if anyone might remember him and want to share their memories with us. Cpl. Andresen served w/ C Co., 2nd Bn., 5th Cav. Rgt., 1st Cav. Div., and was killed on 13 May 1969.
