Summary - January 1968

The first month of 1968 finds C Company heavily involved in operations in the coastal part of Binh Dinh Province south of Bong Son.  The company alternates providing security at various LZ's and Fire Support Bases with operations in the field.  Patrolling in the mountains west of the coastal plains leads to frequent contact and searches in the villages near the South China Sea are equally profitable.  Working with the 1st Battalion 50th Mechanized Infantry,  C Company helps develop heavy contact with the 95th Battalion, 2nd Viet Cong Regiment in the Nui Mieu Mountains. The almost daily discovery of small groups of NVA and VC is due to Communist attempts to infiltrate troops in preparation for the planned Tet offensive which begins prematurely in Binh Dinh Province one day ahead of schedule, on January 30.  (Written by Ken Burington)

The 2nd Brigade of the 1st Cavalry division published a small, mimeographed newsletter titled "Blackhorse Hoofbeats."  In Issue # 23, C Company's artillery forward observer, LT Jack Tingley, was featured in a story about "The Blind FO.".

The complete issue is available for download in the Search/Documents area.

Don Jensen kept good notes while in Vietnam.  When he sent this clipping home, he noted that the assault happened on New year's Day.

From The Army Reporter, Vol.4, No. 4, published on January 27th, 1968, in Long Binh.

Jack Case Jr. holds a Communist flag captured during operations in the 506 Valley of the mountains just west of the coastal plains in eastern Binh Dinh Province.

Notice the fire.  As Ken Burington relates: "And yes, it got cold enough sometimes that a fire felt good.  I can remember some miserably cold nights during this period when we were out on the beach huddling in holes in the sand."

Serving in the 1st Air Cav meant flying a lot in helicopters.  We referred to them as "slicks", as opposed to "gun ships."  Though one never knew what might await us at the new landing zone (LZ), that few minutes up in the cool air was always a great break from the heat and humidity of the ground.  This picture was taken during a combat assault (CA) by C 2/5 Cav somewhere in Binh Dinh Province

During the early part of January, the company is involved in search operations intended to root out Viet Cong living in and around the villages.  In this scene, South Vietnamese troops guard a group of villagers on a beach.
